Malaysian fans prefer less intrusive approach

Mawi probably didn’t bargain for his fans dictating his life.

FANS are such funny creatures. And when it comes to fans of local entertainment, they’re a unique breed altogether.

No, Malaysian fans don’t stalk their idols like they do in America, neither do they mob their favourite stars for autographs or photos. No, that would be inappropriate behaviour for a polite society such as ours.

Generally, Malaysian fans prefer a "less-intrusive" approach. They wouldn’t dream of going up to an artiste and expressing their admiration for his work.

No, the thing to do if you’re a fan here is to stare and whisper among yourselves, usually about how the artiste in question doesn’t look as pretty or as slim in person, all within earshot of the said artiste, of course.

That is if an artiste hasn’t done anything to upset their fans. If he has been up to "no good" — like Akademi Fantasia (AF) 3 champ Mawi who recently went fishing with fellow artiste Diana Rafar — then it’s your duty, as a fan, to make sure he toes the line. How do you do that? Why, you send him text messages filled with foul language, naturally.

Ahh ... fans. Can’t live with them, can’t live without them. And nobody knows that better than Mawi right now.

When news of Mawi’s little outing with Diana broke out, his die-hard fans reacted strongly, accusing him of being disloyal to fiancee Noordiana Md Naim, as if it’s any of their business to begin with.

And Mawi apparently didn’t do himself a favour when he decided to confess to the media, that yes, he did go on that fishing trip but that he was with a group of friends, not alone with Diana as they were led to believe.

Still, fans weren’t satisfied with his explanation and started texting him angry messages.

It became such an issue that practically all the Malay dailies ran stories on this all week.

One article even quoted Diana as saying that Mawi ought to hurry along and marry his fiancee if he wants to avoid any more gossip.

Mawi must still be in shock. How did something as harmless as fishing become so scandalous? How life has changed for him in less than a year.

When he entered AF3 last year, all he wanted to do was to make a better life for his family in Felda Taib Andak in Kulai, Johor.

Oh, he wouldn’t have been so naive as to not realise that his life would never be the same again after the reality-based talent show.

He would have known that, along with the fortune and fame, he’d have to put up with the gossip too. That, we’re certain, he was prepared for.

What he probably didn’t bargain for was his fans dictating his life. It’s like they’re saying: We spent all that money on you, so why shouldn’t we lay claim to your life?

As a product of reality TV, whose fate was determined by the number of people who voted for him, Mawi has had to be extra careful when dealing with fans.

And he has been nothing but charming so far.

But even Mawi needs a time out and fans should give him some breathing space.

They need to realise that the Mawi they see today is not quite the same person they voted for on AF3.

Some of that wide-eyed innocence is gone, the novelty of being the centre of attention wherever he goes is also wearing off. Now they see a more self-assured person.

Surely that’s not a bad thing? Nobody can go through what he did in the last seven months and not come out a different person.

It doesn’t mean he’s forgotten his roots or become arrogant. It’s called being human. The sooner fans take him down from the pedestal they put him on, the better it is for him.

It’s time to let Mawi grow as an artiste. He can’t afford to be making headlines for the wrong reasons, not when he hasn’t fully arrived in the industry.

1. KIAN (Fauzi Marzuki/Lukhman S):

Lagu tipikal balada Fauzi Marzuki tetapi kurang unsur-unsur mejastik seperti Kekasih Awal & Akhir. Aku suka lirik lagu ni kerana begitu puitis yg menyata Mawi berkecil hati dengan perbuatan seseorang tetapi dia masih mengasihi insan tersebut dan menasihati untuk pulang ke pangkal jalan dan mengingati Allah. Suara Mawi amat sesuai menyanyikan lagu ini cuma kurang note tinggi untuk showcase his true voice.

2. LAGU CINTA LAGU JIWA (M.Nasir/Loloq):

This is a fun and catchy song ala-ala a-go-go tetapi liriknya menceritakan perjalanan hidup Mawi sebagai penghibur popular masakini tetapi tiada siapa yg tahu isi hatinya yg sebenar. Aku paling tak suka suara Mawi masa lagu nie kerana sounds macam terkepit then terus tengelam bila M.Nasir mula menyanyi.

3. KURNIA TUHAN (Ajai/Loloq) :

This is not a typical lagu Ajai. Cuma yg dapat aku connect lagu nie adalah karya Ajai semasa bridge kedengaran suara Ajai menjadi backup singer...hehehe....aku tak tahu nak letak lagu nie dalam genre ape....lirik macam lirik lagu nasyid/ketuhanan/alam semesta tapi iramanya pulak ada campuran pop, nasyid dan rock....ehm.....suara Mawi macam suara Mawi nyanyi lagu Pupus .....crystal clear.....esp part tinggi....

4. DI PINTUMU (M.Nasir/M.Nasir) :

Irama nasyid padang pasir seperti lagu2 Al-Jawahir begitu ketara di dalam lagu ini. Suara Mawi pulak amat terserlah dalam lagu nie macam mendayu/merayu/merintih. Cuma ada sedikit kecacatan pada dua tempat esp masa dia sebut ....oh mengapa......aku rasa sebutan Mawi lari dari tempo about a nano-second....

5. PEREMPUAN (M.Nasir/Loloq) :

Sebuah lagu berirama Melayu upbeat. Very infecticious....Aku suka banget dengan lagu ni bukan saja kerana ditujukan pada kaum hawa.....hehehe.....tetapi pada rentaknya dan kombinasi instrumen2 yang digunakan untuk lagu ini.....hehehe....Lirik lagu menceritakan harapan dan impian seorang lelaki terhadap perempuan. Cuma lagu nie kurang menonjolkan range suara Mawi.

6. CINTA HAKIKI (Yassin/Yassin) :

Lagu ciptaan Yassin nie adalah kombinasi lagu Salsabila dan Berkobar-kobar. Cara penyampaian Mawi dalam lagu nie seperti menyanyi lagu nasyid Intifada yang agak terkepit dan menyempitkan tekak.....hehe...memandai jer aku.....aku kurang suka lah suara Mawi masa nyanyi lagu nie. Lirik menceritakan pencarian seseorang kepada cinta yang hakiki iaitu cinta kepada Allah.

7. ADUH SALIHA (M.Masir/Loloq) :

Antara banyak-banyak lagu dalam album ini, Aduh Saliha ni memang sesuai dengan vokal range Mawi. Aku seperti merasakan lagu ni dicipta khas untuk Mawi. Muzik yang ditonjolkan berunsur latin, middle eastern dan tradisional Melayu. Liriknya memang puitis tapi aku tak berapa suka lirik berkaitan kesengsaraan hati insan apabila putus kasih.......eeeee....meluat.....dah banyak sangat lagu dan lirik yg bertema seperti ini terutama lagu2 Adnan Abu Hassan.

8. YANG TERCINTA (M.Nasir/Othman/Loloq) :

Lagu ni mencabar vokal Mawi untuk mencapai note dan sustain note tersebut supaya tidak sumbang. Fuh.....rasanya kalau Mawi nyanyi lagu nie dalam setiap function, mesti koyak suara dia....haha....jangan marah.....Liriknya pulak pasal kejatuhan sebuah kota bersejarah akibat perang.....well, rasanya sumer orang tahu kota yang dimaksudkan.

Komen pasal cover album:

Aku rasa ada satu gambar Mawi pakai jacket petak lebih menarik untuk dijadikan coverlah......aku pun tak pandai nak komen pasal artistic value tapi pada aku ok jer lah.....gambar Mawi nampak happy dan bergaya seperti memegang dunia dan menghadiahkan dunia Mawi kepada peminat. Yang mendukacitakan, turutan lirik lagu untuk Aduh Saliha dan Cinta Hakiki salah dan terdapat lirik-lirik yg salah untuk beberapa lagu.

Ranking Lagu:

Perempuan, Kian, Aduh Saliha, Lagu Jiwa Lagu Cinta, Kurnia Tuhan, Di PintuMu, Cinta Hakiki & Yang Tercinta.

Komen keseluruhan album:

Untuk album studio pertama amat membanggakan walaupun tidak semua yang perfect. Aku rasa berbaloi sangat membeli album Mawi nie kerana semua lagu sedap didengar dan berkualiti bukan hanya satu tau dua lagu yang sedap seperti kebanyakkan album penyanyi yang ada di pasaran sekarang. Mungkin album ini adalah sebuah album eksperimen untuk mencari identiti sebenar Mawi tapi aku berpuashati dengan album ini. Diharap untuk album kedua pihak Meastro perlu memilih lagu2 yg menyerlahkan kemampunan vokal Mawi seperti lagu Seroja dan Kekasih Awal & Akhir yang tidak begitu ditonjolkan dalam album ini. Aku rasa kalau dimasukkan lagu joget atau zapin juga akan menguji versatility suara Mawi.

Aku sekadar menyuarakan pendapat.
